It’s nearly time to begin another school year! Our plans have been a little late in the making, but that’s just fine. Here you’ll find my simple homeschool curriculum plans for 6th grade. I always like to remind myself that a plan is just that: a plan. It is not my master! Plans can change and they can be improved on. This list may end up looking a little different once the school years gets going. But to begin with, this is what my 6th grader will be starting this year!
Bible
Henry will be continuing his own Bible reading through the year. He has been making his way through the Bible reading a chapter at a time. We’ll still be reading Scripture together in Morning Time as well.
Spelling/Language Arts
This year my 6th grader will be using Spelling You See’s American Spirit workbook to focus on spelling and copywork. We have used other spelling curricula in the past that focused more on spelling by rote memorization and that didn’t work well for him. Spelling You See has daily activities that focus on repeated reading and copywork to improve spelling. I think he will enjoy the activities and themes in this curriculum much more.
In addition to spelling, he’ll also be doing one weekly written narration.
History
In addition to our Morning Time history readings together, Henry is also going to be studying the medieval age on his own this year.
He will choose one book per term from our list of living Medieval history books and do verbal and written narrations.
Literature
Henry will be using the reading guides from Logos Press that accompany these titles. The reading guides are great to help with reading comprehension. He’ll be using these guides in place of narration for literature this year. I’m assigning him one book per term.
- The Canterbury Tales retold by Geraldine McCaughrean
- The House of Sixty Fathers by Meindert DeJong
- Shadow of a Bull by Maia Wojciechowska
Latin
For the past several years, we’ve used Picta Dicta Latin and it has been a HUGE hit! My kids love all the characters and being able to hear all the Latin words pronounced for them. It is amazing how easily they’ve learned Latin words and phrases and I know it’s because of how well Picta Dicta works. The program is primarily computer based and they now have an app for it as well. There is also an accompanying workbook that each student has to work through. Henry will be continuing this program throughout the next year.
Here is a sample of a Latin story used in the program:
Science
This year 6th grade science is going to be through AOP Monarch online! We began using Monarch late last school year and my older kids really enjoyed it. Because I have struggled to get through a formal science curriculum with my kids, I decided to “outsource” it! We’ll still be using living science books in our Morning Time together, but Monarch will cover a more in depth science study for the older kids.
Math
My son will be continuing some math from last year. He began Math U See Epsilon last year and will finish it up this year.
I hope you have found this plan helpful! As I said earlier, plans are not our masters and they can change! We never want to become curriculum slaves. But having a plan in place for our school year can be the doorway to discovering what works and what doesn’t for our students and ourselves. Keep that in mind as you get ready and plan for a great homeschool year!
