Simple Homeschool Curriculum for 3rd Grade (2024-2025)

July 25, 2024 by Lettie Leave a Comment

It’s almost time for another school year to begin! Here is the homeschool curriculum that we plan to use for 3rd Grade this year.

In our homeschool, I try to keep everyone’s individual daily work to just the basics: reading, writing, and math. I feel that, when you are homeschooling multiple children, keeping their individual work to a minimum makes for more successful days. All of the other subjects (history, science, etc.) we cover through read alouds, Morning Time, or group lessons with their siblings.

So this list may seem very sparse. But that is intentional! I have another list coming soon if you’d like to see what we’re covering in Morning Time for this year. I hope you find this helpful!

Handwriting/Copywork

This year we will be trying out Spelling You See for handwriting and copywork. I heard really great things about this and it sounds like a great fit for my third grader this year! In years past, I have used Writing With Ease for copywork with my other kids and loved it. But I think that Spelling You See will be a better fit for this specific kid. In addition to practicing handwriting and copywork, spelling lessons are also covered in this series!

Phonics

I have always used The Ordinary Parent’s Guide to Teaching Reading and will continue on with my third grader. He hasn’t picked up reading as quickly as others, but I think this year will be a turning point for him. We are tinuing daily phonics lessons in The Ordinary Parent’s Guide and aim to be finished with it by the end of this school year.

Math

This is a year of trying out new curriculum! For math we are going to give Math With Confidence a try. We have always used Math U See and we are HUGE fans! But my third grader is more of a visual learner and it’s been a challenge keeping him interested. Math With Confidence looks like a really great fit for him. From what I’ve looked at so far, it looks very similar to Math U See in its approach, but is much more visual with lots of illustrations! Math With Confidence is published by The Well Trained Mind.

I hope you find this list of 3rd grade homeschool curriculum helpful! If you would like to see all the subjects and living books we’ll be using in Morning Time and read alouds this year, that list will be shared soon!

Welcome

The Bookwise Mom is a place for moms to find the best books for their homeschool and be inspired as she cultivates her heart and mind through her own reading life. I hope you’ll find encouragement here as you dig deeper into the world of books and pursue your own education through great reading alongside your children.

My husband, Michael, and I are 2nd-generation homeschoolers and have 6 children (all boys!) ranging from 7th grade down to toddlers.

Looking back at my own experience as a homeschooler, I found that it wasn’t through expensive curriculum that I learned the most. My real education came from reading really great books. And I’ve found this to be true for my kids as well!

I know how tempting all of the beautiful curriculum is. Don’t get me wrong, I still love using formal lesson plans for our homeschool! But what I always come back to is that a really solid education comes when your child truly cares about what he is learning. And most of the time, this happens when they are given a feast of wonderful living books and great classic literature.

It also happens when we, as moms, are actively invested in our own reading lives! Nothing, in my opinion, is more contagious than sharing a love of books and reading alongside our children.

I hope that your visit here will encourage and motivate you as you seek out new reading for yourself as well as for your children!
